Although I heard a lot of good ideas from position two, I am still sticking with my original verdict; position one won the trial. From the opening statement, position two mentioned that everything is meaningful because humans build up. However, all the things that human build up is going to fade because nothing can outlive the time. For example, the Beowulf's accomplishments faded because Wiglaf says, "Peace or pact-keeping of any sort from the Swedes. Remember: at Revenswood, Ongentheow slaughtered Haethcyn, Hrethel's son, when the Geat people in their arrogance first attacked the fierce Shyflings" (Gardner 197). This makes what Beowulf had done pointless. Therefore, there is no meaning in building up; it is just events that will disappear eventually. If everything is destroyed sooner or later, there is no point in living meaningless life. Also, the definition of meaningless is to have no purpose or reason. Thus, if what human built up is going to fade; then there is no purpose why people built up. What is the meaning of existence, if every accomplishment fade? Most importantly, Beowulf mentioned that if he did not kill Grendel, there could have been complete disaster in Dane. However, time will kill Grendel eventually, so Grendel's death had no meaning at all, which makes existence meaningless. Besides, Beowulf's glory did not go for a long time, it was an event that will be forgotten; thus, past is irrelevant. Going back to my points, I believe that nothing matters, since existence is meaningless. If there is no purpose in living, then there is no importance in life, which leads to nothing mattering. Moreover, everything is occurred by unplanned accidents due to the fact that there is always faith in life. It was not Grendel's choice to be born as what he is; it was simply an unplanned accident. Also, when Grendel slipped off from the blood, it was also unplanned. Therefore, question was proved that the world is meaningless with past irrelevance and unplanned accidents.
